Class 5 Pond Dipping at Wollaton Park

07 May 2015

On Tuesday 5th May Class 5 visited Wollaton Hall and Park. We had a packed day investigating the plants and wildlife.
Our day began at the Camellia House where we loved looking at and sketching the beautiful flowers.
Once the Hall opened, we visited the Natural History Museum. One of our favourite discoveries was that the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest member of the animal kingdom and can reach speeds up to 242 mph!

It was then time to put our waterproofs on to begin Pond Dipping. We carried nets, insect identification cards, magnifying glasses and other equipment down to the lake. We had some terrific discoveries! Sam found a water beetle, Linnae got very excited by a leech and others found swimming mayflies, water nymphs, worms and even water fleas!

After lunch we went into the Visitor Centre and were able to see lots of stuffed animals that make Wollaton their habitat. There was a huge deer which many of us sketched.
During the afternoon we collected a huge variety of leaves and looked at what trees they had come from. They were all unique, just like us.

We measured the circumference of the trunks and divided it by 2.5 to find the approximate age. Did you know that some of the trees in the park are around 264 years old?!
Then we had Ice Creams- the Crunchie ones are the best! A highlight for many of us was the play area at the end of the day.

We’d definitely recommend Wollaton Park as a great place to visit!
