Brackenhurst Orienteering
19 May 2015
On Thursday 7th May, Class 4 went to Brackenhurst to practise the orienteering skills we have been learning in P.E.
A lady called Corby met us there and showed us into a classroom. We had our fruit snack while we looked at a map of the site. We worked out the key and saw ponds, woodlands, buildings and paths. Corby also pointed out the Ha-ha, which is a ditch with a fence in to stop the cows coming into the garden.
Next, we walked across to the house to begin our orienteering task. We were put into teams and given 9 markers to find. We had to use our maps to follow routes around the beautiful woodland. We learned that we had to work together as a team to complete the challenge.
Just as we finished orienteering, it began to rain so we went back to the classroom for our lunch. Luckily, everyone had a waterproof coat!
In the afternoon, we did team challenge games. Some examples were ‘Save the Planet’, where we had to lift one bucket into another just using ropes. It was quite difficult! We also had to ‘cross the swamp’ using stepping stones, complete a jigsaw blindfolded and create a code using a whistle to guide ‘sheep’ into a pen. We all worked together really well to complete the challenges and had a lot of fun.
We would recommend this trip to class 3 for next year!
